A pioneer in the circular economy

For decades, Tiileri has been a pioneer in the circular economy. We make versatile use of industrial side streams that give our bricks their unique appearance. Our guiding principle, “making the most of everything with care,” is not just a slogan – it is part of the core of our operations and is concretely reflected in the material choices of our products.

Now we are taking responsibility to a new level. We are among the first in the industry to use renewable diesel in brick firing – and we do it in cooperation with the Finnish company Neste. Thanks to this innovative fuel solution, we are able to cut CO₂ emissions in half. When this is combined with the extensive use of recycled materials, the result is a significantly more environmentally friendly product without compromising quality.

Tiileri – for sustainable architecture.

Brick – an environmentally friendly building material

An environmentally friendly building material places as little strain on the environment as possible throughout its long lifecycle.
Houses have been built with brick for thousands of years. Brick manufacturing technology has evolved, but the end result, a durable brick, has retained its original properties and character.
The most significant emission reduction measures in brick production include developing the firing process and using lower-emission fuels, using thinner veneer masonry, and developing brick compositions.

Natural materials

Tiileri bricks are mainly made from clay and sand extracted near the factories. After the clay has been extracted, the fields are restored for other uses.
No toxic additives are mixed into the material, which makes brick a safe building material for residents.

“I am proud to say that I work at a brick factory, and so is the entire staff. They want to say that they have made the bricks for a particular hospital, daycare centre, or residential building.
Those bricks can be recycled and reused even a hundred years later, when the building reaches the end of its service life.”

Roots

The use of brick as a building material has traditions spanning thousands of years. According to current knowledge, bricks were first used about 6,000 years ago. Fired brick is known to have been used as early as 2200 BC. In Finland, brick construction was already known in the Middle Ages, but modern brick construction as we know it today emerged with industrialization in the latter half of the 20th century.
The roots of Tiileri’s Ruukintiili lie in Northern Ostrobothnia in Ylivieska, where the only factory in Finland currently producing Ruukintiili still operates. Brickmaking has traditionally provided employment in the surrounding area, and fortunately the skill of making bricks has been passed on to new generations.

Brick recycling

Up to 40% of Tiileri bricks can consist of recycled material originating, for example, from production waste from other industries.
At the same time, no waste is generated from our own production.
